Pick an exercise. Rudiments run five reps a hand and compare your leads; the sustained roll is one graded take.

How it works

Test is a library of graded exercises. The sustained roll is the classic: roll on a practice pad, a desk, or your knees, scoring starts at your first hit and runs three seconds, and you get a score out of 100 and a letter grade. Every spike above the noise floor counts as a hit.

  • Evenness measures how steady the gaps between your hits are. This is most of your score.
  • Consistency measures how similar your hits are in volume.
  • Speed rewards squeezing more hits into the three seconds. It counts in the sustained roll only.

Live never stops listening and never grades you. It scores a sliding two second window of your hits and plots evenness and consistency as they change, so you can watch a roll settle down or fall apart while you play it.

The rest of the library is the Scottish pipe band rudiments: the numbered rolls from the three up to the seventeen, the drag figures, the paradiddles, and the figures that define the five pipe band styles, the 2/4 march, the 6/8 march, the reel, the jig and the strathspey. Rolls are written open, as taps, because a closed buzz has no strokes to count, and drags are written open too, because a deadsticked grace note and the note it decorates reach the mic as one sound. Every exercise is a rhythm cell with a written tempo range, and the same cells are what fall in Bubbles. Each one is played five times leading right, five times leading left, pausing between reps so each rep can be pulled apart. Your reps are graded against the rhythm as written, so a march dot-cut is judged as a dot-cut and not as an even run. The mic cannot hear which hand you used, so it trusts you to follow the sticking. Your five reps of a lead are averaged together and the two leads are put side by side, which is where a weak hand shows up. Each stroke of a finished run is saved in your browser as three numbers: when it landed, how hard, and its tone. Everything else is recomputed from those, and the footer shows how much is stored.

Bubbles turns the rudiments into a game. Bubbles fall with a rhythm written on them, right hand above the staff line and left hand below; play that pattern cleanly before one lands and it pops. Wrong stroke count or sloppy spacing and it keeps falling. Three lives, and the patterns get longer and faster as you go.

The experimental coach prompt button gathers your saved runs and the latest run's stroke numbers into one complete prompt, ready to paste into whatever model you like. The page never sends it anywhere itself.

Audio never leaves the page. The mic feeds a level meter and the samples are thrown away.
